The clock was ticking. Sure, he was somewhat in disguise because he looked like a businessman in a three-piece suit, rather than an escaped convict, so okay, but he was still an escaped fugitive with the heat presumably bearing down hot on his heels.

But he goes probably twenty or thirty miles out of his way — at the risk of being spotted and recaptured — just to leave a wad of cash under a tree that might never be found by a guy whose chances of actually getting out of jail were considered slim-to-none to begin with? Right?

It could be considered that — minus the stroke of luck that Red finally did get parole — Andy was somewhat throwing money away that would never be found or might be found by a complete stranger. Because how the hell did Andy know Red was ever going to get out? Even if Red did get out, why not save your money and just have him find his way down to where Andy was on his own?

But that is sort of the point. It was an act of faith on Andy’s part. It was an act of hope.

Andy had everything when he escaped. Money, freedom, independence and a place to settle where he could live in peace for the rest of his life. There was only one thing missing. Someone to share that life with, someone to pass the time with and live out their days.

Red is certain that Andy will break down in tears on his first night at Shawshank. Andy doesn’t cry and Red loses his bet. Their relationship starts when Andy asks Red to smuggle a rock hammer into the prison for him.

Overtime Red becomes amazed at the many things Andy does to get everyone in the prison over to his side. It was as if he was witnessing Andy perform miracle after miracle. He even starts to contemplate that Andy wasn’t a murder. At worst he was a bad husband. Andy tries to convince Red at some point that hope is a good thing. And Boggs was the king of those; and Norton knew it— because he allowed it, for that reason of intimidating prisoners into doing whatever he wanted… or bad things would “happen” like that, and he could just claim he wasn’t responsible for every act of the prisoners.

Normally Andy never said anything, as Red says in the narrative; so Norton didn’t know Boggs was doing it.
