I recently got a call from 866 area code. Should I be worried, or is this a scam? This is my first time dealing with this.
An 866 area code number is a specific type of toll-free number located in the United States and serving all areas within the NANP (North American Numbering Plan). This includes the US, Canada, Bermuda, and a few islands in the Caribbean.
Most 866 numbers are from legitimate businesses. But scammers may use an 866 number to disguise themselves. Because 866 is a toll-free number, many scam companies will use them to try to trick potential victims.
You said that you got a call from 866 but you didn’t say about what the call was about. So if you didn’t give any of you information and money is not involved so don’t worry about it.
But you has to be aware that scammers are using area code and numbers that look legitimate. I had the experience to call my internet provider but I googled the business number and I almost got scammed. As I talk to the internet provider and give all the information that I had … she told me that is our number and they was going to investigate . Thank God that I found one of my bill and I use that number…
The red flag for me was when I call back the number they give me and ask to speak to the lady and I give her name . The guy want more information to help me and because I didn’t want to give it to him , he was getting nasty. After I told him off I hang out and search for the bill , found it , call them .
I act fact , cancel my card payment and ask for a new one . They got nothing from me and I learn not to google numbers of any company that I use … I will go direct to the bill that they send and look for the number… That was a close!!! But thank God I am keeping my eyes open and trust for others is O. This loser are everywhere.

A phone number with a 866 area code keeps calling me, but not leaving any voicemails, are they a scammer?
866 is not actually an area code it is a redirect number. All toll free numbers are redirect numbers to a phone number, this from bygones ago were created so that a caller could use the phone and not have to pay for the call. This was typical for Pay Phone use where someone would need to drop money in every few minutes.
Toll Free numbers such as 866 are for the Movie Line (it still is a thing but very out of date), bill collectors, customer service for insurance or warranty repair service. There are many legitimate reasons and purposes. SINCE you did not post the number I can not GOOGLE it to see who might be using it and what its reputation online is.
If they don’t leave a message, it’s probably a scammer. All “866” numbers are toll free along with “800” numbers. The reason I wouldn’t call back to find out is, it could connect to an overseas number. Because so many numbers are spoofed, you can’t be sure where your call is going or if it will cost you money on your phone bill. You could do an internet search on the number and see what info is available.
The other day my phone recorded a call from the “The Chinese Embassy in DC”. Why would they be calling me unless it was a scammer? I have no foreign business contacts and don’t want any! They didn’t call back which is fine by me, so it was probably a scam call or a spoofed number.
Scammers occasionally spoof numbers with legitimate numbers.
Google the reputation of the full 866 number to see who could be using it. Or call it back. Do not provide personal information to who ever answers.
I been getting blown up all of a sudden by 866 are code number?

Conclusion
Probably, but not necessarily. The 866 area code is toll-free. A legitimate survey company (I’ve worked for several) may call and not leave messages – I know I was instructed not to leave a message on many studies, and not to leave a message until the third or fourth attempt on several others. Google the 866 number to see who it is. Or call them from a phone that’s not yours- if you can still find a pay phone in your area, try that one.
866 is a toll free number here in the US. It could be a business. If you don’t want to answer the call, just let it go to your voicemail. If it is important, they will leave a message. If not then they won’t. Just delete it.
Get yourself a call blocker. This works great. It may or may not be a scammer, could be a robo call, salesperson or simply a wrong number. There are people who do not like voice mail, my one son is one of them.
If the caller don’t leave any message, I just ignore the call. Google the Area Code 866 and it will tell you what it’s all about. Remember it is the RECIPIENT who pays for the call NOT THE CALLER. It is a scam call.
